Forecast before access
Check the official forecast, radar and any marine or flood advisories before leaving. Look beyond rain probability to wind, temperature change, visibility and thunderstorm timing.
Water level, flow and temperature records can help explain access and habitat conditions, but a gauge may be distant from the exact location.
Update at the water
Compare the forecast with the sky, wind and water you can actually see. Mark safe exit routes before dark and reassess if the shoreline, current or visibility differs from expectations.
A rising wind or distant thunder is a safety signal, not an invitation to make one more cast.
Thunder ends the session
NOAA advises moving to a substantial building or hard-topped vehicle when thunder is heard or a storm threatens. A shelter, tree, tent or open boat does not provide safe lightning protection.
Wait at least 30 minutes after the last thunder before returning. When in doubt, leave early.
