Ready the camera first
Keep the fish in the water in a rubberized net while the camera, framing and exposure are prepared. Wet hands before contact and avoid dry towels or abrasive surfaces.
If a photo cannot be made quickly, skip it. The release matters more than the image.
Support, do not suspend
Hold the fish horizontally with two points of support and close to the water. Do not hang a large fish from the jaw or squeeze its abdomen.
Use a short burst instead of repeated poses. At night, avoid prolonged bright light in the fish’s eyes and check that footing is secure.
Return deliberately
Place the fish upright in calm water and allow it to swim away under its own power. Do not throw it or move it forcefully back and forth.
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service recommends quick release, wet hands and tools, and cutting line close to the mouth rather than tearing out a deeply swallowed hook.
