Prepare offline
Download permitted maps, the forecast, access notes and current regulations before departure. Save an emergency contact and share the trip plan with someone ashore.
A phone can fail through water exposure, cold, battery loss or poor reception. Carry an independent light and navigation backup appropriate to the trip.
Protect night vision
Reduce brightness before reaching the water and use the warmest practical display setting. Open only the tool needed, then lock the screen instead of leaving it glowing.
Avoid shining a screen or light across other anglers, nearby homes, wildlife or the water. A red or amber task light may feel less disruptive, but it still needs thoughtful use.
Keep attention on the water
Use the device while stationary in a secure position. On a boat, navigation lights and safe operation come before recording a catch or checking a map.
Treat location sharing carefully. Public catch posts can expose fragile access points or spawning habitat.
