Start with the job
Choose a presentation by the depth and cover it must travel through. In open water, a moving presentation can search efficiently; around wood or vegetation, snag resistance and control may matter more.
Low light changes what the angler can see, so tactile feedback and a tidy casting area become especially valuable.
Contrast is contextual
A clear silhouette can help in some surface or shallow-water situations, while vibration or water displacement can matter when visibility is limited. Water clarity, moonlight and background all change contrast.
Change one variable at a time—depth, speed, profile or location—so the result teaches you something.
Rig before sunset
Tie knots, organize tools and cover exposed points before the light fades. Use a focused task light only when needed and keep spare rigs accessible.
No lure choice overrides weather, boating or access rules. Leave when conditions become unsafe.
